The Biophilia Foundation and American Rivers have released a new report about the workforce for riverscape restoration in the West. The report, Practitioner Perspectives: The Workforce for Low-Tech, Process-Based Riverscape Restoration, presents findings and recommendations drawn from a focus group, interviews, and brainstorm session with restoration practitioners.

Findings range highlight the structure of the workforce, identify sources of training and gaps in training, and present solutions to seasonal employment.

Recommendations include:

  • Increasing mentorship opportunities
  • Increasing field training opportunities
  • Creating avenues for interagency training
  • Developing best practices for contracting and grantmaking

While federal funding continues to be in flux, many low-tech, process-based restoration (LTPBR) projects are in progress, and much work remains to be done throughout the West.
