Mudford Farm Designated a "Farm of the Future"
One of Biophilia Foundation's farm restoration projects, the Mudford Farm, has been chosen by the US Department of Agriculture as a Farm of the Future case study. We have diversified the working farm, adding the production of ecosystems services to the traditional crops of corn, wheat, and soybeans. Remodeling the farm operation by restoring wetlands, grass meadows, and riparian buffers on less productive soils will create a more economically viable enterprise, provide critically needed habitat, and help work toward restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.
Pritzlaff Ranch: Beavers Building Habitat
Working with 75 seventh graders from Memorial Middle School (MMS), the Pritzlaff Ranch, in conjunction with River Source and Citizen Watershed Monitoring Team, hosted the Beavers Building Habitat program. Field work at the Ranch rotated students through three activity stations: beaver survey, water quality testing, and forest restoration along the Sapello River. Students evaluated after participation showed notable increases in basic beaver knowledge and increased awareness of the ecological impact of beaver dams.
